Alzheimer’s disease has devastated so many families, but many organizations are doing the work to find out more about the causes, develop treatments, and provide much-needed support and services to families dealing with the disease. One of the foremost organizations is the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, dedicated to educating families and funding research towards treatments and, eventually, a cure.
AFA was founded in 2002 by the son and caregiver of a woman who lived with Alzheimer’s for more than a decade. During that time, in the 1980s and 1990s, there was little publicly-available information for patients, caregivers, and the general public, leaving families feeling unsupported and often frustrated. His goal in founding AFA was to ensure that no other families would have to go through these difficult times alone. Since then, AFA has become a leading organization for Alzheimer’s information and support. The organization includes a nationwide network of over 2,000 member organizations for more local and specific help. AFA itself also operates services like a toll-free helpline, a National Memory Screening Program, training and resources for professional caregivers, and much more.
Along with providing immediate assistance to patients, families, and caregivers nationwide, AFA funds researchers who are seeking better information, treatments, and cures for Alzheimer’s. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, AFA has been able to fund projects to identify at-risk individuals, improve early detection, research the underlying causes (and potentially find treatment avenues there), treat behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s, develop more effective treatments, and much more, all in hopes of reducing the effects of this disease.
“Part of The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s mission and commitment is to provide support, services, and education to those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and fund research for a better treatment and cure. I believe that access to resources is imperative to the family members, caregivers, and patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It is a devastating disease that I have personally witnessed a close family member experience,” said Kaylee Hileman, Talent Sourcer at Blue Rock Search. “This is a topic I am passionate about, and I hope more families are able to utilize the resources and support offered to learn more about the disease, preventative measures, access to testing, and potential treatments with continued research.”
Blue Rock is proud to highlight and support the incredible work of Alzheimer’s Foundation of America!
