For 75 years and counting, the Muscular Dystrophy Association has been at the forefront of research and support for those living with over 300 neuromuscular conditions. Many of these conditions are relatively rare and less understood, making it more challenging for those diagnosed to get the care and support they need. The MDA, with the help of its supporters, aims to change that, paving the way for groundbreaking treatments and advancements in therapies to help people around the world live longer, fuller, healthier lives.
The MDA provides support across a number of fronts. Their research program awards grants to top scientists who are investigating causes, treatments, and cures for those living with neuromuscular diseases. To date, the organization has invested over $1 billion, with over 7,000 scientists around the world developing knowledge and therapies, including gene therapies and several FDA-approved therapies for specific diseases.
They also provide support for those impacted by these diseases, with a network of Care Centers, support groups, community education resources, the MDA Summer Camp, and much more. It’s a comprehensive approach designed to support living and thriving in the here and now while also raising awareness and funds in hopes of a better future.
For Dawn Russell, Vice President of Recruiting at Blue Rock Search, the MDA’s work is very close to home. That’s why, in 2025, she’s running the NYC Marathon and taking the opportunity to fundraise in support of the MDA.
“My family’s connection to this cause began when our daughter Sophie was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a neuromuscular disease,” she says. “While we’re thankful that she is able to lead an active and fulfilling life, we also know that the future is uncertain – and that many others face many more challenges. As part of this community, we’re passionate about supporting research for better treatments, as well as support for those diagnosed and their loved ones as they navigate the ups and downs.”
